Major Digital Marketing Trends 2021

We made it to 2021, and many of us have high expectations for what this year will bring. But, let’s face it, it won’t take much to wow us given the year we’ve all just had. While it may appear like you made little progress in 2020 and spent the majority of your days working from home in your sweats while watching reruns of your favorite sitcoms to remind you of simpler times, there was actually a lot going on in the digital domain. 8  major Digital Marketing Trends 2021.

It’s reasonable to say that digital marketing has now entered the mainstream. I don’t have to explain what I do to my grandmother anymore because she’s now a zoom fanatic. So, while the rest of the world was essentially at a stop, the Internet was ablaze, igniting major events, social action, and disruptive marketing. So, what’s hot in 2021, or about to grow even hotter?

That’s exactly what I’m here to talk about today. This week’s post excites me since it’s one of my favorite things to nerd out on when it comes to digital marketing trends. So there you have it: six digital marketing trends to keep an eye on this year.

Streaming Video

Streaming Video, Keep reading because this isn’t quite as startling as number six on the list. But I’ve been saying this for a long time. Video is the way of the future, and it will continue to be so in 2021. In fact, given recent events, it is expected to grow much faster than planned. 8  major Digital Marketing Trends 2021.

Even if you’ve never thought of yourself as a video person. 2020 has very likely turned you into one, whether you realize it or not. In fact, live video exploded in popularity by 99 percent in 2020. Yep. Yes, you read that correctly. People all across the world turn to video to keep connected as a result of the global pandemic mandated stay-at-home orders and social distancing restrictions, and hopping on a zoom call became the latest thing to say in absolutely no time.

Zooming is something we do for business, happy hour, and vacations. We focused on every detail. Other modes of video communication became increasingly common as the general public became more acquainted with video. TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook Live, and even Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn have live video capabilities.

Yes, it’s safe to say that people are enamored with it. And you can bet your company is paying attention. The wise ones, at least, are, but the live streaming craze isn’t over yet. You’ll be relieved to learn that if you’re not a video person.

Content for Audio

The popularity of audio content is on the rise. So here’s a weird fact: over a hundred million Americans listen to at least one podcast per month. If you’re anything like me, and you’re hooked with history and true crime podcasts, you’ll listen to one or two per day. 8  major Digital Marketing Trends 2021.

But, boy, has podcasting come a long way since its inception? Have you been living under a rock if you haven’t listened to at least one podcast? These free streaming treats cover every topic imaginable, and you can listen to them while doing just about anything else.

When my house is as tidy as it has ever been, I know I’m listening to a good podcast because I usually try to find a million things to do and clean while I’m listening to a podcast and procrastinating on actual work.

However, this statistic serves as a stark warning that audio content will continue to grow in popularity in 2021, and Twitter understands this. They just added the ability for users to submit audio-based tweets.

Audio Content Streaming

Oh, and don’t forget about the new kid on the block, Clubhouse, an audio-based software that is shaking up the world of voice-driven social media. The other day, I honestly spent two hours on a clubhouse Livestream. It is currently exclusively accessible by invitation, and only a few people from around the world have been granted access.

But don’t worry, if you haven’t already, you will get your chance. So, basically, the clubhouse allows you to enter virtual rooms where you can have voice chats with other people about anything without having to look at your device. The person who establishes the room has complete control over speaking privileges and topics, while everyone else is free to come and go as they wish. 8  major Digital Marketing Trends 2021.

As a result, the jury is yet out on how this software will impact the marketing industry. But be on the lookout. I’ll be keeping an eye on this one. So, whether you’re a regular podcast listener and audio message sender, or a clubhouse veteran, one thing is clear: in 2021, we won’t be able to ignore certain audio stuff.

Activism for a Brand

With the world’s much-needed growth in political, social, and environmental activism last year, it’s no wonder that brand activism has emerged as a hot marketing trend in this day and age. Hundreds of corporations spoke up and engaged in activism in 2020, such as this Nike ad supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, pushing people to join the fight and stand up for equality for all.

For example, the debut of Ben and Jerry’s limited-edition flavor Unplug Our Future, which calls for Australia’s leaders to address climate change and invest in a more sustainable future. Consumers want marketers to back up their claims with action.

We don’t simply want a great product; we want a great product from a great company that shares our values. And this has evolved into much more than a passing fad or marketing gimmick; it has become an expectation that corporations assume social responsibility. 8  major Digital Marketing Trends 2021.

But keep in mind that when it comes to brand activism, this isn’t just another bandwagon to hop on. Consumers can tell the difference between false and genuine B.S. It’s probably best to just keep silent until you’re following up your encouraging words with appropriate action or investment.

Content Created by Users

User-generated content is the most effective word-of-mouth marketing method you can use. It all boils down to the reality that individuals trust one another, but we don’t always trust brands. At least, that was not the case at first.

We all expect a company to advertise itself and brag about how fantastic and superior it is. We’re all ears when someone else advertises them, and we’re far more inclined to buy. Nothing solidifies our purchasing choice like watching a successful case study or unpacking video.

Personalized Content

Personalized content, Branded content is another video marketing concept that has been on the increase. This goes back to the fundamental marketing idea that customers don’t want to feel like they’re being sold something; instead, they want value, entertainment, and an experience.

And that is precisely what well-executed branded content accomplishes: it provides a pleasant experience for the customer without forcing an advertisement down their throat. In fact, sponsored content is twenty-two times more interesting than other display and banner advertising, which, to be honest, we usually just scroll right past because they have become cyber noise. 8  major Digital Marketing Trends 2021.

Times have changed, and that style of confrontational marketing is no longer effective. Branded content is effective because it provides amusement, information, or inspiration to the audience. The best-branded content is sometimes so undetectable that you don’t even notice its branded material.

Consider The Lego Movie, which may go down in history as the best-branded entertainment ever created. Consider that for a moment. The entire film is subtly marketing you Lego products, but you have no idea what’s going on since you’re so engrossed in the plot and the pleasure of watching it.

Then, at the end of the film, you find out. By the way, if any of you are hidden Lego enthusiasts who haven’t seen the movie yet, the entire Lego universe was created by a youngster playing with Legos in his basement. That was fantastic. The film transformed a generational toy that was losing appeal into a cool item that every kid desires.

Nostalgia Marketing is a type of marketing that focuses on the past

Do you ever recall a commercial from the 1980s and can’t help but smile or sing that annoying jingle? Yes, that is nostalgia at its finest. Nostalgia is that nostalgic yearning for the past, which I thought was a mental disorder when the phrase was first formed in the year 1688. We’re lucky we don’t live in the year 1988; else, we’d all be in the psychiatric ward.

Nostalgic marketing takes that spontaneous sensation of nostalgia for the past to a whole new level by creating ads and marketing campaigns with a single goal in mind: to generate good memories and a strong emotional connection to the brand. It is, indeed, on the rise. You’ve already heard it.

Looking to the past is key to the future of digital marketing. Nike, Pepsi, Gucci, AT&T, and Cheetos are just a handful of the prominent businesses that have recently reintroduced some timeless masterpieces into their marketing campaigns. 8  major Digital Marketing Trends 2021.
